Biography
Matthew Lau is a business lawyer based in Toronto, focusing on advanced legal research and analysis in all areas of our Canadian common law practice. Matthew advises our clients and lawyers on a broad range of legal areas, including in the regulatory, transactional and litigation contexts. He provides solutions for complex and novel legal issues and prepares arguments for significant litigation.
Matthew has extensive experience advising on consumer protection and financial services regulatory compliance matters under both federal and provincial law, including on topics such as consumer contracts and disclosures, advertising, licensing, electronic signatures, anti-money laundering, securities and derivatives. He has advised various businesses including corporations, financial institutions, financial services businesses and retailers. He has also assisted Schedule I, II and III banks in developing their regulatory compliance management libraries as well as reviewing their corporate policies and consumer-facing documentation to ensure compliance with applicable laws.
Matthew joined our office as a summer student in 2013 and returned to complete his articles with us in 2014-2015. During his articles, Matthew completed a secondment in the Royal Bank of Canada's general counsel group, where he worked on securities, regulatory and privacy matters.
