Biography
Nick Merritt is a project finance and banking lawyer with a particular focus on sustainability and sustainable finance. He previously served as the global head of infrastructure, mining and commodities. Nick has been based in Asia for over 24 years with the firm.
Nick focuses on major infrastructure projects. He has advised clients across a diverse range of sectors including biofuels, defence, EV manufacturing and charging, mining, petrochemicals, ports, power generation, rail, renewables, roads, satellites, sport and leisure infrastructure, telecoms, water and waste.
Nick advises clients on the development of sustainability disclosures and reporting strategies. He supports companies in identifying their sustainability opportunities and risks; business transformation and the development of sustainable financial investments, particularly those aimed at mobilizing capital into the energy transition and the financing of sustainable infrastructure. He advises clients on their pathway to net zero and has also advised clients on the legal design and risks of circular economy manufacturing and recycling.
Nick is recommended in a number of legal publications, including Chambers and Partners Asia-Pacific and is ranked in the ‘Hall of Fame’ by Legal 500. He is likewise recognized in the Who’s Who Legal for project finance and in the International A List of the India Business Law Journal for the work he does in India. One client recently noted “Nick delivers expert guidance, strategic advice, and proactive solutions, aligning legal strategies with clients’ business objectives.”
Nick has been active supporter of the not-for-profit micro finance platform kiva.org that provides finance to under-privileged members of society in order that they may build a better future for themselves and families. To date, through this platform Nick has supported more than 128 individuals, in excess of 90 percent of whom are female, in 34 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America. The loans enable their businesses and independence. The donations are used to capitalize the loans and administer the platform. This form of giving enables the same money to be redeployed multiple times as a real catalyst to support and improve people’s lives.
