The results of the midterm elections are in and the change in control of Congress will create a new dynamic in Washington. With Republicans in the majority in the House and Democrats in control of the Senate, the private sector can expect increased congressional and Senate oversight and scrutiny. To successfully navigate a congressional investigation, companies must pilot through a minefield of risks, practices and expectations that differ significantly from regulatory investigations or government enforcement.

What will the next two years in Washington DC look like? With a divided Congress unable to pass major legislation, to what extent will President Biden use the regulatory apparatus to get things done? Former New York State Governor George E. Pataki and White Collar Defense Partner Samuel Ramer will discuss the state-of-play in the nation’s capitol, how it will affect companies and identify best practices in anticipating and responding to congressional investigations.

George E. Pataki served as Governor of New York State for three terms. During his tenure as New York’s chief executive, Governor Pataki advanced award-winning, cutting-edge policies in the renewable energy and environmental fields. His practice focuses on energy, environmental and corporate matters. Samuel Ramer is a former Federal prosecutor who served as counsel in committees in both the House and Senate. He also served as an Acting Assistant Attorney General at the Department of Justice, responsible for all interaction between DOJ and Congress, and advised the Nation’s top leaders on congressional oversight and investigations. Mr. Ramer regularly counsels clients facing inquiries from Congress, as well as high-stakes criminal and regulatory investigations and enforcement actions.
