Biography

Kala is an associate in the Banking and Finance team, based in Johannesburg.

He has a keen interest in transactions in the emerging markets across Africa. Kala has experience in matters involving banking and finance, project finance, real estate finance, acquisition finance, trade finance, and regulatory law in South Africa. He has been involved in several cross border transactions in the financial, oil and gas, energy, and telecommunication sectors. Kala has assisted in the preparation and negotiation of various private corporate Power Purchase Agreements, EPC, O&M and related agreements, as well as advising on the regulations in the South African energy sector. He also has experience in competition law and corporate and commercial litigation. 

Kala is a National of South Africa and Ghana and an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

Kala holds a BA LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand. He joined Norton Rose Fulbright in 2020.

BA (Wits), LLB (Wits)

  • Assisted a consortium, led by Kenya's Safaricom and including Vodafone, Vodacom, CDC and Sumitomo, on its winning bid for Ethiopia's first telecoms licence for US$850m, following a two-year auction process.
  • Assisted Enel, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA), in respect of a renewable energy project financing transaction involving a portfolio of five new wind projects, totalling roughly 700MW of capacity.
  • Assisted a mix of lenders, sponsors, and contractors on onshore wind, solar PV, and biomass projects, particularly with respect to construction, operation, and supply agreements.
  • Assisting Sibanye Stillwater Limited in relation to corporate power purchase agreements and related regulatory matters.
  • Assisting USAID Power Africa to support the East Africa Energy Programme on the development and finalisation of a template agreement for the bilateral trade of electrical energy between the 11 members of the Eastern Africa Power Pool.
  • Assisting in providing advice to a South African bank on an uncommitted revolving secured borrowing base financing facility, with stock under collateral management agreement, to a Borrower made up of two tranches, with an overall cumulative limit of USD15 million.
