Biography

Albert Weatherill is a financial services lawyer based in London. He focuses on financial services, FinTech and is a global lead of our payments practice.

Albert has a broad range of experience advising banks, investment firms, asset and wealth managers, financial sponsors, exchanges and custodians, cryptoassets firms, payment services providers and electronic money institutions, and technology companies in relation to domestic and cross-border financial services matters.

Albert was shortlisted for the Rising Star Innovation Award at the Legal Innovation Awards 2020 and for the Rising Star Award at the British Legal Awards 2020. Albert's diverse advisory practice involves advising clients on regulatory compliance, regulatory change, regulatory engagement, supervisory and enforcement matters, internal investigations, governance, risk management, authorisation and licencing projects, international expansion projects and commercial partnerships.

Albert has market-leading expertise relating to the design, development, commercialization and regulation of innovative financial services and products, particularly across mobile and digital payments, digital assets issuance and trading, platform businesses and marketplaces, digital banking, AI, cryptoassets market infrastructure and custody, banking as a service, consumer and corporate lending, decentralized finance, blockchain and distributed ledger technology.

In addition to his broad advisory practice, Albert has extensive experience acting on mergers and acquisitions, private and public capital markets transactions, reorganisations and restructurings involving financial institutions. He has represented clients on a range of their most complex and multijurisdictional transactions, including Advent International, Bain Capital, Bank of Montreal, Charles Stanley, General Atlantic, Mercer, Barclays, IG, HSBC, KKR, Carne, Société Générale, Cathay Financial, Starling Bank, Allica Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, M&G Investments, The Northern Trust Corporation, Saxo Bank and Virtu Financial.
