Employment and labor team secures jury win for SCI Texas Funeral Services LLC

United States Press release - Business March 2023

After a week-long jury trial, a trial team from our Houston office secured a jury victory in the 61st Judicial District Court of Harris County for client SCI Texas Funeral Services LLC ("SCI"), for a case that was originally filed in June of 2017.

Following testimony from eight witnesses, the jury rejected the claims of religious discrimination and harassment alleged by plaintiff William Coleman, in their entirety and returned a no liability verdict in favor of SCI.

Plaintiff originally alleged seven causes of action: breach of contract, promissory estoppel, discrimination, harassment and hostile work environment under Section 21 of the Texas Labor Code, aiding and abetting discrimination under Section 21 of the Texas Labor Code, retaliation under Section 21 of the Texas Labor Code, negligent supervision, training and retention and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Plaintiff sought actual damages, compensatory damages, attorneys' fees, and punitive damages.

Plaintiff dropped a number of his claims over the course of the case and trial. Only his claim of discrimination and harassment were submitted to the jury.

SCI was represented by Carter Crow and Andrew Yeh, with assistance and support from Stephen Shuchart, Warren Huang and Indiana Coates-Foster of the Houston office of Norton Rose Fulbright.

Plaintiff William Coleman was represented by Peter Costea of the Law Office of Peter Costea and was previously represented by Avi Moshenberg, Ryan King and Daniel Goforth of the Goforth law firm.
