Norton Rose Fulbright advises SMFL on acquisition of stake in Brookfield's Triton

Global Press release - Business April 2025

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised long-standing client Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Company (SMFL) on the acquisition of a minority stake in Triton International (Triton).

Triton is a portfolio company of Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (Brookfield) and is one of the world’s largest lessors of intermodal freight containers. SMFL’s minority stake is in one of Triton’s leased container portfolios with the option to invest in additional assets in the future.

The acquisition of a minority stake in Triton aligns with SMFL’s global strategy to invest in highly liquid and relatively stable assets across three key transport sectors.

The multi-disciplinary and cross-border Norton Rose Fulbright team was led by Tokyo partner Akihiko Takamatsu, New York corporate partner Ryan L. Waggoner, Washington D.C. regulatory partner Thomas J. Delaney, New York regulatory partner Tim Byrne and Tokyo competition partner Marc Waha.

The wider team also included: New York tax and employment partners Michael P. Flamenbaum and David Gallai, Washington, D.C. regulatory partner Stefan H. Reisinger, Hamburg competition partner Tim Schaper and Johannesburg competition partner Mark Griffiths.

The deal reflects Norton Rose Fulbright’s extensive experience in the transport sector and in advising clients on transformational deals.
