In view of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, on June 30 the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) once again extended most deadlines in the period beginning March 16 and ending July 17, 2020, to the next day that it is open for business, i.e., until July 20, 2020.

In making the announcement, CIPO noted that if the circumstances that led to this extension continue, the period may be extended again. However, CIPO remains open for business and it is possible to meet most deadlines using its online services. While CIPO has indicated to the profession that it will provide a warning before the extension period expires, given the cumulative duration of the extension and that all Canadian provinces are currently in some stage of “reopening,” those applicants currently relying on this extension should be cognizant that a convergence of deadlines on a single date could strain the system and should meet deadlines when possible.
