What is one thing you wish you knew about NRF before or whilst applying?
One aspect I wish I had known about NRF before applying is how integral NRF Transform is to the firm's operations. This can be challenging to grasp until you’re actually part of the firm. The overarching objective of Transform is to integrate our technology, cost-effective resource and process-driven solutions directly into the firm's legal services, as well as offering them directly to clients. For instance:
- IDT horizon scan for new tools and approaches for the delivery of legal work
- Business Transformation support delivery of internal strategic projects across EMEA, improving the firms’ operations
- Digital Solutions develop new solutions to support industry wide issues
- Applied Tech builds complex solutions to bespoke client or industry legal needs
- Commercial Management elevates Transform’s profile within the firm to ensure maximum engagement and externally with clients and helps articulate the value of our program in client pitches
This is just a brief overview of Transform's role and some of the opportunities you could be involved with in the BLOG scheme.
What type of work are you involved in on a daily basis?
In the IDT team, our projects are rather diverse, providing a breadth of opportunities for BLOGs. My day will typically involve collaborating with lawyers to identify workflow challenges, prioritising what ought to be addressed, designing innovative solutions, and implementing these solutions effectively.
In addition, we constantly explore future advancements in legal practice by researching various vendors, attending software demonstrations, and testing cutting-edge technologies. This forward-thinking approach ensures that you are always at the forefront of the industry, making your work both dynamic and fulfilling.
What is something you were nervous about before joining your team and how have your feelings changed since then?
As a recent graduate, I initially felt some apprehension about entering the professional workplace. However, my experience with the BLOG scheme has been incredibly positive. From the moment I joined the IDT team, I was welcomed into a supportive and collaborative environment. My colleagues are genuinely committed to my success, providing clear guidance on projects, offering assistance when needed, and celebrating our collective achievements. The transition from university to the workplace has been seamless, thanks to the nurturing atmosphere and the wealth of opportunities available from day one.
What skills do you gain from this role?
From the very first seat, you are immersed in diverse projects that hone your expertise. Skills I have learned in IDT alone include in project management, how to apply design thinking, and the foundations of practical applications like the Power Platform.
These competencies are not only essential for a career in Legal Tech and Legal Operations but are also highly transferable across various industries. The comprehensive training and hands-on experience offered by the BLOG scheme ensure that you are well-prepared for a successful career, no matter where your professional journey may lead.
What is your favourite project you have worked on so far?
Many of the projects that I have been working on will influence the wider firm, and so I’m not sure I can share specific details! But, if you are interested in Generative AI as well as providing an environment for lawyers and clients to engage in ideation then this team would be ideal for you!
What makes this scheme stand out from similar offerings from other firms?
NRF’s BLOG scheme, which first began 5 years ago, stands out as the pioneering initiative by a major law firm to nurture talent in Legal Tech and Legal Operations. This scheme provides the same robust support that our legal trainees receive, ensuring a comprehensive and enriching experience.
Additionally, with Transform now a well-established and integral part of the firm, BLOGs can look forward to engaging in unique and exciting opportunities. Notably, the client secondment experience offered through the BLOG scheme is unparalleled, providing exposure and professional growth.
What support is offered throughout the BLOG scheme?
The BLOG scheme offers exceptional support, reflecting its five-year legacy of nurturing talent in the Business and Legal Ops sphere.
BLOGs benefit from structured support you’d come to expect in a rotational scheme, including weekly one-on-one sessions with supervisors, mid-seat reviews, and end-of-seat evaluations.
Additionally, the scheme provides enhanced support through monthly BLOG meetings, quarterly forums, and regular Lunch and Learn sessions.
NRF Transform’s approachable and non-hierarchical team ensures that you can seek assistance or advice comfortably from anyone, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.
