Celebrating the Norton Rose Fulbright legacy of Martin Scott
Martin Scott recently retired from the firm after an impressive 40 years’ service. Described by his colleagues as energetic, smart, open-minded, engaging, charming and passionate, it comes as no surprise that Martin is a popular and inspirational figure to all those he has worked with.
Alongside Peter Martyr, Martin was responsible for building the firm we know today, expanding the global platform and providing a strong foundation on which the firm will continue to grow.
Martin joined the firm as a newly qualified lawyer in September 1983 but had a long and varied career with the firm spending two stints in the Hong Kong office (with whom he always kept a close relationship partly through the work he did for HSBC) and moving into a management role first as head of corporate and then as managing partner. He has said that one of the real privileges of his latter roles had been the opportunity this gave him to meet colleagues in so many different offices and to see that, notwithstanding some of the cultural differences between offices, there was also a common Norton Rose Fulbright thread running through every office. He was also particularly proud of the growth and success of the Newcastle office which he helped to establish.
The legacy he leaves is one that will last. He has had a hugely positive impact on the culture of the firm, through his leadership and belief in people. Even in such a senior and fulfilling role as his, he always found the time to invest in others, providing support and guidance and building relationships and trust and ensuring the firm is a great place to work.
