Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised TotalEnergies on its acquisition of the West Burton B gas-fired power plant (with co-located 49 MW battery energy storage system) for an enterprise value of £450m.
With a history of over 100 years, TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company that produces and markets energy as well as employs over 100,000 people worldwide. EIG (a leading institutional investor in the energy and infrastructure sectors), via its West Burton Energy platform (a UK-based independent power producer), owns and operates the West Burton B gas-fired power plant which was commissioned in 2013 and is located in Nottinghamshire, England. It is comprised of three combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) with a total output of 1.3 GW and is one of the UK’s most advanced power plants.
The acquisition aligns with TotalEnergies’ ongoing strategy and development as an integrated power player and brings TotalEnergies’ worldwide flexible power generation portfolio to around 7 GW of gross capacity, in addition to its 23 GW of renewable capacity.
The Norton Rose Fulbright team was led by partner Andrew Davies who was supported by a multi-disciplinary team of energy, M&A, tax, competition, real estate, planning and other specialist lawyers from the firm’s London office (including partners Stephen Rigby, Chris Down, Ian Giles, Matthew Hodkin, Mike Knapper, Charles Pinkerton, Lucy Bruce Jones, Catrina Smith, Sarah Fitzpatrick, Lesley Browning, Lara White, Andrew Reeves and David Harris).
Andrew Davies commented: “We are delighted to have supported TotalEnergies with this complex M&A transaction, which brought together many of our skilled energy lawyers from across the firm. Flexible power generation is an integral part of the business strategy of several key players in the energy sector, and we continue to see sustained growth in this area."
Norton Rose Fulbright has over 1,300 lawyers across all practice areas and is one of the largest and most prolific energy, infrastructure and natural resources teams of any law firm in the world. The global team has been at the heart of many of the world’s leading energy and infrastructure projects, including innovative and first-to-market transactions.
