In a story that accompanied the award's announcement, the Business Journal cited Margulies, partner-in-charge of Norton Rose Fulbright's two California offices, for his recent work on several cases:

  • In Proposition 65 litigation over high-exposure to acrylamide, Margulies has provided stout representation for Albertson's, Safeway, Sprouts Farmers Market and Target
  • In a consumer class action case, he is advocating for Milwaukee Tools and Home Depot in consumer class action litigation over whether Milwaukee Fastback work knives are illegal switchblades
  • In one of his major achievements this year, Margulies provided pro bono representation and won an appeal brought on behalf of Margaret Summers, a former member of the board of directors of Wildlife Waystation

His victory in the Wildlife Waystation case was notable because the California Second District Court of Appeals delivered a precedent-setting ruling in a case of first impression in California. The court held that a non-profit organization cannot dodge a lawsuit brought by a whistleblowing member of its board—Summers—by firing that board member. The ruling provides protection for whistleblowers who try to perform one of their duties as board members—maintaining oversight of the organization.

Margulies has a leading practice representing retailers and consumer product manufacturers in regulatory compliance, enforcement and litigation, including consumer class action cases.
