Cal / OSHA citations during the pandemic: Are you vulnerable?

Cal/OSHA is on the verge of issuing scores of “serious" citations related to COVID-19, even in the absence of a specific coronavirus standard or regulation. Though specific details have yet to be released, the citations reportedly will be issued primarily under California's unique Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) standard.

The IIPP standard requires all California employers to identify, evaluate and correct hazards at their workplaces, and to train employees accordingly. It appears the agency intends to use industry guidance that it issued in response to the coronavirus pandemic as de facto requirements under the IIPP standard. Employers that fail to adhere to this guidance may face up to US$25,000 in penalties for a single violation.
