On July 22, 2022, the Pensions (Extension of Automatic Enrolment) Bill was reintroduced in the House of Commons as a Private Members’ Bill and received its first reading. The Bill originally failed to complete its parliamentary stages before prorogation earlier this year.

If the Bill remains as originally drafted, it will implement two key recommendations made under the 2017 review of auto-enrolment:

  • Reducing the lower age threshold for auto-enrolment from 22 to 18.
  • Removing the lower end of the qualifying earnings band from the calculation of contributions.
The Bill’s success will depend on whether it is formally backed by the Government. The second Commons reading is scheduled for October 28, 2022.
