Professional Regulation

All legal advice provided by Norton Rose Fulbright Gaikokuho Kyodo Jigyo is provided under the supervision and control of Japanese qualified lawyers (bengoshi) or registered as foreign lawyers in Japan (gaikokuho jimu bengoshi). All lawyers are regulated by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and the Tokyo Bar Association, the Dai-Ichi Tokyo Bar Association or the Dai-Ni Tokyo Bar Association.

The legal profession is regulated by the Ministry of Justice, Japanese Federation of Bar Associations (Nichibenren) and the Supreme Court.

Complaints Procedures

Claims of lawyer misconduct are reviewed by the Disciplinary Actions Committee of the Bar Association of Tokyo.

Professional indemnity Insurance

Insurance for lawyers covering litigation costs including fees (bengoshihoken) is available through the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.

In addition, we maintain professional indemnity insurance cover as required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority of England and Wales Indemnity Insurance Rules 2013, on a world-wide basis with two Lloyds Syndicates: QBE Syndicate 0386, QBE Syndicate 1886 and Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance. In cases where professional indemnity insurance is required to be placed locally in accordance with statute or regulation, details of such policies can be provided upon request by the General Counsel in London.
