Aimed at year 12 students with an interest in a career in commercial law, RISE, our two-year work experience programme, is designed to provide students with the necessary skills, networks and resources to accelerate their career in the legal sector.

The programme

This course is designed to upskill aspiring legal professionals to be successful in applications for graduate schemes. You will:

  • Be enrolled onto a two year development programme with the firm.
  • Complete work shadowing with both our fee earning and business services teams.
  • Get to know our clients with an insight day at their offices.
  • Participate in a mock assessment centre.
  • Receive specialist training from in house teams including early careers, learning & development and bids.
  • Join our mentoring programme to develop your commercial acumen with our trainees and clients.
  • Join us for your graduation day in our London office

Will I be paid?

You will be paid £500 total split across two instalments across the two years.

All students will be gifted a laptop at the start of the programme. Further IT equipment can be requested and will be reviewed on a case by case basis

Timeframe

During 2024, you will join us for a week of activity during your Year 12 October half term (w/c 28 October)

In your second year (2025), you will complete your virtual mentoring from September – January in Year 13, participating in four one-hour sessions. Once you have completed your final year of study, you will join us for two days in July.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible to join the programme, you must:

  • Be in Year 12 in the September 2024 intake at your college or sixth form.
  • Be within a one-hour commute of either our London or Newcastle office. Office hours are 10:00 – 17:00.
  • Have attended a state school for majority of your time in secondary school.
  • Achieve minimum grade requirements, averaging an overall score of six in your top eight subjects, which must include English and Maths.

In addition to the above, students must flag one or more of the below criteria. You:

  • Spent time in local authority care.
  • Grew up in a household where no parent or guardian had attended University.
  • Have been eligible for free school meals at any point between the ages of 11-16.
  • Came to this country as a refugee/asylum seeker (you must ordinarily reside in the UK on the first day of the first academic year of your course and have been recognised as a refugee on this date).
  • Have been registered as a carer.
  • The occupation of your main household earner is categorised as a routine or manual occupation. A summary of this can be found here.
  • You are attending a state school or college with:
    • below average A-Level or Higher point score and/or
    • low rate of progression to higher education.
