Some people ask me ‘what keeps you going when you feel like giving up?’ So the things that really work for me - it’s just a concept I’ve invented - I call it the freedom of curiosity. So when I’ve been in the most pain, or the most difficult circumstances, and I really really feel like giving up, I try and make my mind really curious. I ask myself ‘wow, I’ve never felt this bad before, I wonder what will happen next’; and somehow that curiosity brings some interest to the situation. It means that there’s something to learn. And the other thing I do, if I’m feeling like I don’t have the motivation to keep going or do something, is I check in with my future self. I almost have a conversation with myself in the future, and I go ‘how will I feel about this tomorrow, or later today, if I don’t do this now?’ And that often really helps me take action, and moves me forward; and I think when we’re moving forward, we generally feel happier, because we can see that we’re making progress with something, whereas when we are stuck or procrastinating, that’s when we perhaps start to get frustrated with ourselves. So freedom of curiosity, and checking in with our future self. |
