Professional Regulation
The CNB (Conseil national des barreaux) is the regulatory authority for the lawyers in France, and in Paris the legal profession is also regulated by the Ordre des Avocats à la Cour de Paris (Paris Bar Association). In addition to lawyers regulated by the French bar, our Paris office also contains:
- England and Wales qualified solicitors and registered foreign lawyers (RFLs), who are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). The SRA professional rules can be found here: https://www.sra.org.uk/solicitors/standards-regulations/code-conduct-solicitors/; and
- foreign qualified lawyers, who are admitted in their respective home jurisdiction. Please refer to the “People” section of our website for further details.
Complaints Procedures
We are determined to ensure that all complaints are sensitively, sensibly and satisfactorily resolved. Please refer to our complaints policy here.
Complaints against French registered lawyers are made to Directory of French Bar Associations | National Bar Council (cnb.avocat.fr). The Bar Council of the Paris Bar sits as the Disciplinary Commission of the Paris Bar and is competent to deal with any infringements committed by the lawyers registered with the Paris Bar.
The European Commission provides a platform for online dispute resolution: https://.ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr. We do not participate in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.
Professional indemnity Insurance
Under French law, indemnity insurance is mandatory for practising lawyers and a condition for being registered with a Bar association. Insurance coverage is paid by lawyers' contributions to their local Bar associations.
In addition, we maintain professional indemnity insurance cover as required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority of England and Wales Indemnity Insurance Rules 2013, on a world-wide basis with two Lloyds Syndicates: QBE Syndicate 0386, QBE Syndicate 1886 and Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance. In cases where professional indemnity insurance is required to be placed locally in accordance with statute or regulation, details of such policies can be provided upon request by the General Counsel in London.
