Biography

Peter is a director in the admiralty and shipping team based in Durban.

Peter focusses on admiralty, shipping, marine insurance, and logistics law and has acted both for and against ship owners in admiralty proceedings.

He has advised both London and local marine insurers on policy coverage and significant subrogated recoveries both in South African and other African jurisdictions (Tanzania, Namibia and Zambia).

Peter has assisted with the development of an extensive logistics risk management tools for the logistics industry, and is actively involved in the logistics sector with his participation in the Exports Club- Durban Chapter.

Peter has been awarded an LLM in shipping law from the University of Cape Town, contributed towards a leading text book, co-authored guidance notes on admiralty, ship registration, and marine insurance for a leading publication, and is a frequent part-time lecturer for the Maritime LLM programme at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Peter has assisted in the following recent deals:

  • Represented the owner of the mv Falcon Traveller against an arrest for a claim amount of USD6.5 million. Successfully brought an application for security for a counter claim and had the arrest set aside. Currently representing the owner in a claim for wrongful arrest against the arresting party for a claim a USD 1. 4 million.

  • Defending the liability underwriter and terminal operator against a claim in the amount of USD 1.6 million brought by the cargo interest and owner following an explosion on board the mv Cecilia B.

  • Representing a metal commodity trader and their subrogated London insurers and Belgian insurers in respect in respect of potential claims against container terminal operator in Tanzania for theft of copper to the value of USD 1,000,000.00.

  • Representing a marine cargo underwriter against a claim of USD 2.5 million following the derailment of cargo in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

  • Acted on behalf of terminal operator cargo storage dispute in respect of potential claim for R4,000,000.00;

  • Represented stevedores and their subrogated London insurer in respect of claims by the ship owner arising out damages caused by crane operations.

·      Peter is on the executive committee of the Exporters Club- Durban Chapter.

·      Peter is also on the executive committee of the Durban Marine Insurance Club.
