Biography

Brittany LaTorre practises corporate litigation and alternative dispute resolution, with a focus on the energy, financial and insurance sectors. Since joining us in 2016, Brittany has acted on a range of complex commercial disputes, including contractual and shareholder disputes, director and officer liability and class actions. She has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta and represented clients in domestic and international arbitrations and expert determination proceedings.

During her articles, Brittany completed a secondment in the legal department of Imperial Oil Limited. During law school, she was actively engaged in Student Legal Assistance and Pro Bono Students Canada and was an editor of the Alberta Law Review. Brittany has also volunteered with the Legal Education Society of Alberta, where she provided guidance to articling students in the "Interviewing and Advising" component of Alberta's bar admission course.

  • Counsel for Vermilion Energy Inc. in summarily dismissing and striking a trademark-related claim, obtaining an order declaring the plaintiffs to be vexatious litigants, and opposing an application for permission to appeal: Vermillion Networks Inc. v Vermilion Energy Inc., 2022 ABQB 287; Vermillion Networks Inc. v Vermilion Energy Inc., 2024 ABKB 222; Vermillion Networks Inc. v Vermilion Energy Inc., 2024 ABCA 261.
  • Counsel for an energy company in an international arbitration under the ICC rules regarding a complex cost-recovery dispute respecting operations in the host state.
  • Counsel in an international arbitration under the ICDR rules involving a supply chain dispute.
  • Counsel for a chemical company opposing an appeal of a Human Rights Tribunal decision by a former employee.
  • Counsel for a bank and financial advisor in a claim regarding allegedly unauthorized investment activity.
  • Counsel for an investment firm in obtaining judgment relating to a fraudulent investment scheme.
  • Counsel for a real estate developer in a misrepresentation claim.
  • Counsel for various directors in investigations, actions and employment standards matters.
