Going from sixth form to a paralegal apprenticeship was a huge adjustment, but it’s one I don’t regret.

After securing my apprenticeship with NRF, I was nervous to see how it would differ from that of the A-level courses that I had grown so used to. It came with its challenges as any new chapter does, but it was evident from the beginning of my apprenticeship that the support received throughout struck a great balance between independent and on the job learning.

The apprenticeship blended theoretical learning with practical experience. There was an expectation to manage my time effectively, balancing studying towards a qualification with working much of the week and dealing with real-life matters. I spent four days a week working, where I assisted with a variety of tasks ranging from drafting defences (as part of my work with the claims team), to undertaking real estate tasks for colleagues in London.

The one day a week I wasn’t working was dedicated to studying towards my Level 4 qualification with BPP. Having a full day to dedicate to my studies was beneficial as I could plan my revision and coursework over a consistent time frame to ensure I covered all content thoroughly. Although I was working for four days and studying for one, I never felt like it was unbalanced or that my studies lacked attention compared to my work commitments in the office.

My apprenticeship was based in the Newcastle office, and I sat in the Legal Services Team. The team ensured that I had plenty of opportunities to be exposed to various areas of law, with many opportunities to acquire different skills, whilst ensuring your exam technique and required knowledge for the qualification is maintained on your scheduled study days.

As an apprentice in a brand-new field, there were definitely challenges I had to overcome during the two years of the apprenticeship, however, the rewards have far outweighed any hurdles I encountered. Not only have I gained practical skills whilst working alongside seasoned professionals, but I have had the opportunity to travel to our London office to work with those colleagues I speak to daily on large matters, as well as for networking events.

Being a paralegal apprentice in a global law firm allows you to be a vital part of many teams across the firm. I have had the pleasure of working with colleagues in different offices across the world, for example, I work closely with many colleagues based in our Amsterdam office, and this was something I never imagined I would do as an apprentice.

Now that I have completed my apprenticeship, I have an increased level of responsibility as a paralegal. The shift to paralegal felt different as I have shown I can be trusted on more complex matters – something which the two-year apprenticeship was instrumental in establishing. I am relied on by numerous partners and associates to assist with their matters on a daily basis, and it is a great feeling to be a part of their team and work on projects which have a global reach.

If you’re considering a paralegal apprenticeship, my advice is be prepared to put in some hard work but make sure to enjoy the experience fully as it will offer you opportunities to do things you never thought you could do so early on in your career.

Transitioning from sixth form to a paralegal apprenticeship was a big change for me. I’ve had so many positive experiences whilst working at NRF which makes me feel so excited to see where this journey takes me. One thing I’m certain of is it’s only just beginning.
