Regulator says it’s time for trustees to strengthen their scam defences

United Kingdom Publication September 2022

Nicola Parish, the Regulator’s executive director of frontline regulation, has said that the Regulator’s ambition is to create a world where everyone is informed of the risk and protected against pension scams.

Two years ago, the Regulator launched its Pledge to Combat Pension Scams, which offers trustees the chance to demonstrate publicly their commitment to keeping their members safe from scams. To date, over 500 organisations have made the pledge or self-certified that they meet the Regulator’s scam beating standards, with the result that over 16 million pension pots are now better protected.

Trustees are now being urged to tighten their scam defences. This summer, the Regulator has been calling on those organisations that have made the pledge, but not self-certified, to complete the self-certification process.

Details of combatting scams and self-certification on the Regulator’s website can be found here.
