Biography

Yan Yee, Wong is a litigation and disputes lawyer based in Singapore. She focuses on international commercial arbitration and investor-state arbitration.

  • Acted for the directors and majority shareholders of a landmark 26-year-old departmental store in Singapore known as "Mustafa Centre" with an annual revenue exceeding S$464 million (as at 2018), to defend against claims of minority oppression and breach of directors' duties before the Singapore Courts. Currently acting for the majority shareholders in the valuation of shares for the buy-out ordered.
  • Acted for South African investors to resist an application by the Kingdom of Lesotho to the Singapore Courts to set aside a Permanent Court of Arbitration award directing that a tribunal be convened to resolve expropriation claims of US$1.8 billion. The Singapore Court of Appeal's decision on the matter is found in Swissbourgh Mines (Pty) Ltd and others v Kingdom of Lesotho [2019] 1 SLR 263.
  • Acted for the Republic of India in an application to the Singapore Courts to set aside a Permanent Court of Arbitration jurisdictional ruling obtained by Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., involving claims of approximately US$290 million, and an application involving the same dispute to resist the admission of Queen's Counsel in Re Gearing, Matthew Peter QC [2019] SGHC 249.
  • Acted for a state-owned company to resist an application to the Singapore Courts by a company to set aside an ICC award permitting the termination of a 20-year procurement contract worth at least US$449 million in BVU v BVX [2019] SGHC 69.
  • Acted for a company in 2 Singapore-seated arbitrations relating to the licensing of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game concerning aggregate claims of US$2.072 billion.
