Biography
Alexandre Caya is an engineer, a lawyer and a registered patent agent in Canada and the United States. He practises in the area of intellectual property and is particularly interested in the development of innovative companies, from the startup to the maturation phase.
As a lawyer, he assists his clients in financings and transactions (buying/selling) by advising them on aspects relating to intellectual property. Alexandre also participates in the due diligence of intellectual property assets, various commercial agreements and transaction documents in these contexts. He also drafts and reviews commercial agreements.
For Alexandre, clients are business partners. He offers them intellectual property strategy advice to grow their businesses through intellectual property audits, commercial partnerships and by protecting their intellectual property.
As a patent agent, Alexandre's practice includes the preparation and prosecution of patent applications and the management of patent asset portfolios and industrial designs in various fields of mechanical engineering. In this capacity, he provides advice on issues regarding patentability, validity, counterfeiting and freedom to operate in the areas of sporting equipment, robotics, medical equipment, energy, clean technologies, transportation, road infrastructure, manufacturing, construction equipment, and consumer products. He also provides assistance with patent-related aspects in intellectual property litigation.
Alexandre has been a speaker as part of the "Patents in Biomedical Engineering" course offered to graduate and postgraduate students in the Biomedical Engineering department of McGill University's Faculty of Medicine.
While studying at university, he was part of a research group focused on cycling, specifically on the vibration of components and structures and on bicycles' dynamic behaviour. He also worked at a manufacturing company in the field of components for off-road and military vehicles.
