Our Summer Program

Our summer program offers students challenging and rewarding work, comprehensive training and strong career development in a professional, yet friendly, environment. Every student receives comprehensive orientation and will have the opportunity to engage in work that aligns with their individual interests. Summer students are exposed to various practice areas and are involved with legal research, drafting legal documents, and client meetings. Students also gain experience in the practical components of court appearances, closings, and related work. Each of our summer students is assigned two associate mentors who are there to offer their guidance and advice on general matters around succeeding as a summer student.

Our goal at the Vancouver office is to provide our summer articling students with a blend of work experiences, giving them broad exposure to diverse areas of law and practice styles during their early careers. Upon joining our firm, you will be placed in a rotational system that includes the Solicitor and Litigation rotations, with 50% of your articles spent in each rotation. Our summer experience also includes numerous continuing education sessions focussed on such topics as legal research, writing, and understanding due diligence, media skills training, and business etiquette — all of which will be helpful as you begin your professional careers.

And we're not all work! We host a number of social events where you'll get to know other students and practitioners. A few examples include softball, an annual golf tournament, an annual student event at a Vancouver Canadians baseball game, and weekly teas with our library. We also host TGIF in our Sky Garden on Friday afternoons with appetizers and beverages for everyone to share while debriefing the week's events and chatting with colleagues.

Our Articling Program

When you article with us, the demands will be high, as will be the rewards. As a student, you will have full access to our legal professionals at all levels and to the tremendous opportunities that a leading international legal practice can offer. Our partners and associates will take the time to get to know you, professionally and socially and will actively participate in the development of your student experience and, ultimately, your career as a legal professional. Each of our articling students is also assigned two associate mentors who are there to offer their guidance and advice on general matters around succeeding in articles and becoming a new lawyer.

Upon joining our firm, you will be placed in a rotational system, which includes the Solicitor, Litigation and Unassigned rotations. Typically, our students spend three months in their Solicitor rotations, three months in their Litigation rotations, and the remainder of their articling terms in the Unassigned rotations, which allows them to customize their experience with us, based on individual preferences.

You will receive formal evaluations at the end of each rotation that are designed to assist you in continuing to develop your skills and to allow us to follow your progress. In addition, you'll receive training to help develop your legal research and writing skills.

Calgary

Our Summer Program

We are committed to developing engaged and highly skilled legal professionals. In our Calgary office, that commitment begins with our summer student program. First- and second-year students arrive in early May and spend their summer working with great people, who also happen to be talented lawyers doing incredibly interesting work.

The work is challenging and rewarding and the setting is one of structured informality. As a summer student, all the tools for embarking on your legal career will be at your disposal. Every student is assigned mentors from different practice areas who provide guidance and facilitate a comprehensive experience at the practice. That experience includes substantive legal research and document drafting; exposure to court appearances, transaction closings and client meetings; professional development sessions; and invitations to a collection of social events that take place throughout the summer.

Our aim is to facilitate your exposure to a variety of work and a variety of people, giving you the opportunity to determine which areas of law you might like to pursue in practice. Along the way, you will have the benefit of great mentorship, practical training and development, and meaningful feedback.

Our Articling Program

Three principles underscore us as a practice: Quality, Unity and Integrity. Those same principles inform our articling student program. We are committed to ensuring that your student experience is a success in every way. In addition to the support and mentoring you receive from your principal, all of our lawyers are responsible for facilitating your growth and development as a young lawyer. It is a responsibility we take very seriously, as the success of our organization depends on it.

With an emphasis on lawyer training and continuing professional development, we offer an in-depth orientation to the practice and its operations, as well as weekly Insider Training seminars for ongoing substantive training. The seminars run throughout the year and range from sessions conducted by our lawyers or speakers, to informal discussions amongst students, to half- or full-day workshops. As an articling student, you also have the opportunity to attend external seminars sponsored by the Legal Education Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and other professional organizations.

In our Calgary office, articling students are encouraged to focus on a specific practice area. Not only does this provide the opportunity to become a well-integrated member of the team and develop greater expertise in a specific field, it allows students exposure to more substantive work and see files through to completion.

Each year we have between 9 and 12 students in Calgary, most of whom have come through our summer student program. When we hire students outside of this program, we do so in accordance with the rules of the Law Society of Alberta. Articling students are interviewed at the conclusion of their second year of law school during a pre-determined two-week period in June. Once hired, articling students typically begin their articles during the summer following graduation from law school, or after completing their court clerkships.

The articling program in Alberta consists of 12 months of articles, which includes participation in the CPLED program. As part of the CPLED bar admission course, we have introduced an at-home weekly study day to enable our students to balance their study requirements and work assignments.

Within your assigned practice area, you will perform a variety of tasks, assisting lawyers with due diligence on transactions, reviewing and drafting agreements, and researching and writing memos on various areas of law. We believe in giving you practical responsibilities to enhance your professional expertise through hands-on experience. We are also dedicated to providing ongoing meaningful feedback, both formally through regularly scheduled performance evaluations, and informally through real-time feedback on your assignments. Our aim is to provide you with all the tools necessary for becoming engaged in, and masterful at, the work you do.

Toronto

Our Summer Program

Our summer program offers students challenging and rewarding work, comprehensive training and strong career development in a professional, yet friendly, environment. Every student will be offered a comprehensive orientation and will have the opportunity to engage in work that aligns with their individual interests. Summer students are exposed to various practice areas and are involved with legal research, drafting legal documents, and client meetings. Students also gain experience in the practical components of court appearances, closings, and related work.

Our Toronto summer program does not have any fixed rotations, so students can get work from as many practice areas as they wish. Our summer experience also includes numerous continuing education sessions focused on such topics as legal research, writing, understanding due diligence, media skills training, and business etiquette — all of which will be helpful as you begin your professional career.

And we're not all work! We host social events where you'll get to know other students and practitioners.

Our Articling Program

When you article with us, the demands will be high, as will be the rewards. As a student, you will have full access to our legal professionals at all levels and to the tremendous opportunities that a leading international legal practice can offer. Our partners and associates will take the time to get to know you, professionally and socially and will actively participate in developing your student experience and, ultimately, your career as a legal professional.

The Toronto articling period is organized into rotations through our four main practice groups. You will complete a rotation in each of business law and litigation, and will have the option of doing a rotation in employment and labour law and/or intellectual property. You can also choose a rotation in our tax or legal research practices, as well as external secondments at one of our clients.

You will receive formal evaluations at various points in the articling process that are designed to assist you in continuing to develop your skills and allow us to follow your progress. Our lawyers also make a habit of providing real-time feedback, given their commitment to student development. In addition, you’ll receive training to help develop your legal research and writing skills.

While we don’t have guaranteed hire-back, we seek to grow our practice from within. We also host numerous social events during the articling term so students can continue to get to know the lawyers within the practice.

Ottawa

Our Summer Program

Each year, we hire approximately six summer students who work with us in our Ottawa office from mid-May to the end of August. As a summer student, you will rotate through our three general areas of practice: business (including regulatory), employment and labour and litigation. You will be assigned a mentor to help you learn and blend into the firm. As we don’t have a formal work allocation system, you can organize your own files and manage your own time, with appropriate oversight.

You’ll be involved in a variety of tasks, such as assisting lawyers with trials or arbitrations, helping corporate lawyers with due diligence on transactions, attending Small Claims Court or arguing motions as well as researching and writing memos on various areas of the law.

We believe in giving you hands-on responsibilities so you have the opportunity to learn and grow through doing.

You’ll participate in our continuing legal education program, which is sometimes facilitated by video conference, so you can interact with our other offices. These programs focus on legal skills such as research, drafting and advocacy, and on business skills such as client development and media training.

While working and learning are enjoyable, we also offer some real fun by hosting both formal and informal social events that will help you to get to know other students and members of the firm. Our Ottawa office is tightly knit, which means that you all have the opportunity to make several long-lasting and meaningful connections.

Our Articling Program

Our articling student rotations are the same as summer student rotations. You’ll therefore spend time in the business (including regulatory), employment and labour, and litigation groups. Your final two months of the articling period will be spent in the area of your choosing (and balanced with firm needs).

You will receive formal evaluations at various points throughout the articling term designed to assist you in continuing to develop your skills. Our lawyers also make a habit of providing real-time feedback, given their commitment to student development. In addition, you’ll receive training to help develop your legal skills.

While we don’t have guaranteed hire-back, we seek to grow our firm from within.

As with our other student programs, socializing with colleagues is encouraged, as this will help you mix with other firm members informally. We host a number of events during the articling term, which foster our culture of teamwork and mutual respect.

Montréal

At our Montréal office, we offer three main programs: our Summer Program, our Articling Program (also refer to this section regarding the terms related to Bar School) and our Secondment Program.

Our Summer Program

If you accept our employment offer, you will have the opportunity to work with us in the summer, full-time.* During this period, you will become familiar with our culture and our wide human, technological and legal resources. You will research case law, as well as be involved in files from our 4 practice groups - Business Law, Litigation, Intellectual Property and Employment and Labour Law - at their various stages. Also, you will participate in the preparation of conferences, client presentations and draft legal writings. You will take part in our National Program of Continuing Legal Education together with the members of our different offices. These training sessions will allow you to build up your legal skills, such as research, writing and representation, along with your business skills, such as customer service and media relations. *Note that you will have the opportunity to work part-time in the fall and winter.

Several activities will take place throughout the summer, allowing you to connect with the other students in our student programs (your future colleagues), as well as the lawyers in the firm.

Our Articling Program

Our Articling Program meets the requirements of the Québec Bar. We offer two articling periods during the year - one in the summer from June to December, and one in the winter, from January to July. Our Articling Program is designed to give you practical experience, allowing you to participate in negotiations, in the drafting of contracts, in the pleading of motions before the court, and gives you an opportunity to assist in a transaction. You will be entrusted with responsibilities similar to those held by our young associates, enabling you to demonstrate initiative and leadership right from the start. After a brief orientation program, you will begin the first of your three rotations of 7-8 weeks each chosen from our four practice groups -Business Law, Litigation, Intellectual Property, and Employment and Labour Law, after which you will choose and notify us of a practice group where you will be applying for permanent employment as a lawyer.

The Bar

All costs associated with Bar School, from the registration to the purchase of your textbooks, are reimbursed by the firm. Like you, we have your success at heart. You will therefore be remunerated on a weekly basis during this period, which will allow you to concentrate fully on your studies without working. Furthermore, before you begin Bar School, you will have the opportunity to attend a training session where articling students/young associates who have recently passed the Bar will share their experiences and provide you with useful tools to master the challenges of the Bar. We will also provide you with educational materials in order to facilitate your transition to Bar School.

Our Secondment Program

Our Secondment Program provides you with an opportunity to work on-site within the legal department of some of our clients. Generally speaking, this opportunity is made available after you have spent a summer working with us.

Since we have initiated this program 10 years ago, clients have taken part in this program giving us a unique opportunity to clearly identify their needs. Our Secondment Program has strengthened the lasting business relationship between us and our clients.
