Our Toronto and Montreal offices advised the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) on behalf of the Government of Canada on the launch of the Canada Green Homes Grant.

This program is part of the steps the federal government is taking to fight climate change and protect the environment under Canada’s 2020 C$15bn climate plan, “A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy”. The stated goals of the Canada Greener Homes Grant are to help homeowners make their homes more energy-efficient, create new jobs across Canada for energy advisors, grow our domestic green supply chains, and fight climate change.

Under the Canada Greener Homes Grant, up to 700,000 Canadian homeowners are eligible for grants of up to $5,000 to make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes and up to $600 to pay for an EnerGuide home energy evaluation, before and after retrofits.

Under the Canada Budget 2021, the federal government provided C$4.4bn to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to provide interest-free loans to help homeowners complete extensive home retrofits under this program. Eligible home upgrades include replacing windows and doors, adding insulation, sealing air leaks, improving heating and cooling systems (e.g., heat pumps), installing smart thermostats and solar panels.
