Sports pages of the print media often comment on the ownership changes of Premier League football clubs. Occasionally, the business pages will pick up a story where a transaction completes and a club does in fact change control.

Last season, however, with the acquisition of Chelsea by a consortium led by Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss as well as the acquisition of Newcastle United by an investment consortium led by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and also comprising RB Sports & Media and PCP Capital Partners, we saw football clubs, and the question of who owns them, dominate the political landscape in a way that no one could have ever predicted.

In this year’s report, the third in our series, we again seek to analyse the trends relating to ownership changes, what happened last season and what the future might bring.
