We appoint renowned cybersecurity partner Annie Haggar in Canberra

Australia Press release - Firm September 2024

Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright today welcomes new Australian head of cybersecurity Annie Haggar in Canberra.

Annie is one of Australia’s leading cybersecurity lawyers with a proven track record of excellence in the field of cybersecurity and technology law in Australia and globally.

As founder of Cyber GC, a specialist cybersecurity and technology law firm, Annie has established herself as one of Australia’s best-known cybersecurity lawyers, having supported multinational businesses, governments, and critical infrastructure clients on emerging cyber issues across a more than 20-year career.

Throughout her career she has advised on traditional technology contracting, outsourcing, emerging technologies, alliances and partnership, mergers and acquisitions and cybersecurity, and has worked with clients in the technology, security, infrastructure and government sectors.

As the head of cybersecurity in Australia, Annie will support our clients across multiple sectors, industries and practice areas as part of the firm’s global cybersecurity and privacy team, where she will help to provide an end-to-end cyber offering to global and domestic clients.

Prior to founding Cyber GC, Annie held senior global and Asia-Pacific legal roles in cybersecurity, strategic partnerships, complex contracting and digital and emerging technology over more than a decade at technology giant Accenture. She has also worked as a lawyer in an international law firm.

Norton Rose Fulbright chief executive partner in Australia, Alison Deitz, commented:

“Cybersecurity has exploded as a critical area of the law for all organisations., We are thrilled to have Annie join us with her decades of experience advising clients at the forefront of cybersecurity and the opportunities stemming from digital transformation and new technologies. Annie’s trusted relationship with multinational companies, governments in Australia and overseas and organisations involved in critical infrastructure will bolster our Australian and global cybersecurity offering.”

Norton Rose Fulbright global head of cybersecurity and privacy, Chris Cwalina, commented:

“We are so pleased to welcome Annie to our dedicated global practice of more than 90 cybersecurity and privacy lawyers based in many of the world’s key jurisdictions, helping clients improve their cybersecurity programs, prepare for and respond to cybersecurity incidents, and manage legal and regulatory risks related to cybersecurity, privacy and information governance.”

Annie Haggar commented:

“Given how quickly issues develop in the global cybersecurity space, global law firms play a critical role in helping clients prepare for and defend against cyber and security threats on multiple fronts. Global firms can bring the necessary scale and insight to help clients appropriately govern cyber risk, mature their cybersecurity posture, or to prepare and respond effectively if a breach occurs. I am looking forward to helping Norton Rose Fulbright continue to build its full-service offering in cybersecurity and privacy so more of our clients can take the necessary steps to minimise risk and protect their organisations from security threats.”

This announcement follows the appointment of partners Lisa Fitzgerald in April (technology, Melbourne); Bede Gahan in March (employment and labour, Canberra); Kimberley MacKay in February (regulatory and disputes, Melbourne); and Liz Hastilow in January (corporate and investment funds, Sydney), along with the promotions of Kellie Link (restructuring, Perth), Maria Panos (dispute resolution, Sydney) and Jacqueline Plant (environment and planning, Melbourne) in January.
