We advise Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners on deal with Grok Ventures for the SunCable project
Australia | Firm | December 2023
Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has advised investment manager Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners (QIP) on its transaction with companies related to Grok Ventures for the development of the SunCable renewable energy project in the Northern Territory, Australia.
SunCable is an Australian renewable energy company that aims to build the world’s first intercontinental power grid. It has been owned by private investment company Grok Ventures since September this year.
QIP is a ‘value add’ investment manager with a specialist focus on the energy transformation, across low carbon and renewable energy supply, storage, grid stability, data centre, industrial and supply chain decarbonisation and related assets and businesses.
QIP will support Grok as development partner for the DarwinLink component of the project focused on delivering 24/7 renewable electricity to Darwin for use in new green industry and for on-sale to Singapore via the SingaporeLink leg of the project. In this role, QIP will facilitate ongoing governance and development of the onshore aspects of the project, which includes solar generation, battery storage, transmission and related generation and connection infrastructure.
Norton Rose Fulbright energy partner Kate Muller commented:
“We are thrilled to work alongside QIP on this transaction, which will advance Grok's vision to convert the abundant solar resources of the Northern Territory into green electrons to power communities and industry. The formation of relationships like this, between key actors in the energy transition, will better deliver the urgent decarbonisation and reform needed to future proof our environment and economy.”
The Norton Rose Fulbright team was led by Kate Muller, with partner Martin Irwin, senior associate Tarrant Sewell and associates Edward McCombe and Diarmuid O'Carroll advising on the core transaction documents, and with discrete assistance from partner Martin Osborne and senior associate Amy Parry on employment issues.
