Global solar portal - An AsiaPac perspective

We’re now firmly on the path to a low carbon future. There are two key global themes for me. The continuing rise of solar PV and no more dumb renewables. Solar PV continues on a relentless march across the global energy markets. It is delivering lower LCOEs across multiple markets and, very importantly, quickly delivering low cost energy to many markets which were traditionally deprived.

When I talk about no more dumb renewables, I mean that the renewables industry should no longer get a free ride. In order for the industry to continue to have social licence, it must – it is part of the electricity system – it cannot just effectively expect to be able to dump power into markets without thinking about the consequences. We’ve seen in multiple markets across the world the implications of renewables not thinking about the system impact. But this issue goes to all stakeholders. We must start to plan our systems better for the inevitable rise of renewable energy and how we can better utilise these almost free electrons which we will have from the rise of solar PV.
