Paul Maynard has been announced as the new Minister for Pensions, following Laura Trott’s promotion to chief secretary to the Treasury in the recent cabinet reshuffle. Mr Maynard, who was elected Conservative MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys in May 2010, has previously held positions as government whip, transport minister and justice minister. Before entering Parliament, he worked as a political adviser and speechwriter.
Mr Maynard comes to the role at a crucial time. The absence of a Pensions Bill in the King's Speech has left a range of pensions issues unresolved, so Mr Maynard inherits a very busy inbox. There are currently several unfinished projects where secondary legislation is required, as well as an ambitious policy agenda following the Mansion House proposals.
