The Government has confirmed it will extend the voluntary National Insurance (NI) deadline, which was originally April 5, 2023, to July 31, 2023, in order to give taxpayers more time to fill gaps in their NI record going back to 2006 and help increase the amount they receive in state pension. This follows concerns that the DWP and HMRC phone lines were unable to cope with demand. Additional NI contributions will be at the previous rate, and will not include increases due in April 2023.

For most people, the chance to pay extra NI contributions to boost their state pension makes financial sense and the extension to the payment deadline has been welcomed.
